The cocktail got its name in the 1940s, when American workers in the Iranian oil fields who wanted to quench their thirst mixed vodka and orange juice together with a screwdriver. The drink is refreshing and easy to drink, with the sweetness and fruity acidity of the orange juice being tightened by the vodka. The flavor has a good balance of sweetness and sourness.

The three rums overlap in flavor, making it very refreshing, fruity, tropical, and easy to drink, but because it is a long cocktail with a high alcohol content, the total alcohol content when consumed is high, making it a bit dangerous. Audrey Hepburn drinks this cocktail in the party scene of the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's." The original Zombie Cocktail was created by Donn Beach for his restaurant Donn the Beachcomber in 1934. Donn is said to have created this drink for a man who needed help curing a hangover before a business meeting. This hungover customer returned to Donn's bar a few days later and complained that the drink had made him a "zombie" for the entire trip. Donn the Beachcomber, along with many other bars and restaurants that serve the drink, limits customers to two bottles per person, and Donn explains that the drink can make a person "like the walking dead" because of its eye-popping alcohol content.

The sweetness of the rum and the orange flavor go well together, and the fruity sweetness and freshness make it easy to drink. This recipe is derived from "Screwdriver". When made with gold rum or dark rum, it has a very different taste with a mellower and richer flavor.

The unique tequila smell is suppressed, making it easy to drink even for those who do not like tequila. The sweetness of orange juice is also suppressed. Switch the base of "Screwdriver" from vodka to tequila, and you get "Changuirongo". "Tequila Sunrise" is made by adding grenadine syrup. If you submerge aromatic bitters, it becomes "Tijuana Sunrise". If you float Galliano, it becomes "Cactus Banger".
