This cocktail is named after the Bronx, located on the island of Manhattan, New York City. It was conceived during the Prohibition Era in the U.S. to drink illicitly brewed, inferior gin. It has the subtle sweetness of orange and suet vermouth, but also the crisp dryness of gin. Substitute rum for the gin and you have "Third Rail. Add egg yolk and you get "Bronx Gold". Add egg whites for "Bronx Silver".
