It has the aroma of tomatoes and a sludgy mouthfeel, and the addition of salt and pepper gives it a tangy flavor. It is said to have been created in 1921 at New York's Bar in Paris (renamed Harry's New York Bar in 1923). It was named after Mary I (1516-1558), Queen of England and Ireland, who was called "Bloody Mary" because she persecuted Protestants for the sake of Catholic revival.
